Lemon Scented Myrtle
Scientific name: Backhousia citriodora
Appearance
● Its leaves are oval shaped, glossy green, 5 to 12 centimetres in length, and lemon scented.
● It will grow 6 to 8 metres tall.
Uses
● Lemon scented myrtle leaves can be used in teas, syrups, glazes, cakes, biscuits, dressings, sauces, ice creams, dips, and meat dishes.
● Can be used to flavour fish dishes, treat headaches and as an insect repellent.
● Oils can be made from its leaves that smells lemony. Also, it is good for killing bacteria.
● It is used in lotions (shampoo and natural cleaning products).
Location and climate
● It grows in wet, coastal places in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland.
● Lemon scented myrtle prefers a warm, sunny or shaded spot that’s protected from frost, cold, and icy winds.
Interesting facts
● It is referred to as the ‘Queen of Lemon Herbs’
● Indigenous people have used Lemon Scented myrtles for 40 000 years.
